The Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes Semi Final
Supported by Pedigree

Sunday morning and another new event, this time the Novice Final. It has been a brilliant year for Novice dogs, the quality at every show has been quite unbelievable, many of them by now will have progressed to Senior, but this Final was still going to be like no other that most of them will have been in before.

I was anticipating there being about ten clears, bearing in mind the occasion, as it was we had nine clears. The biggest smile of all came from the Helen Davey-Smith, who, with the fastest five faults, made it into the evening Final. I was very impressed with Rachel Sturman, Angela Gadenne and Anne Edwards. Most of the others in the top ten were the handlers who quickly summed up exactly what was needed to reach the Final. But having said that, the first to run had no idea at all how it would all turn out, so it is to her great credit that Gemma Hanekom with Boo ran an excellent round from the start which was rewarded with a place in the Final.

The Kennel Club Novice Agility Pairs Relay

As with the Standard dogs on Saturday, the first ten from the Sunday morning semi final went through to the final that evening and the next ten were running in the consolation event which was the afternoon Pairs Relay.

As with other Pairs Relays at Olympia, time and faults were added together and the handlers ran in reverse order from their morning’s placings. Elizabeth and Mark had a stunning clear round less than one second ahead of the second placed pair and they were both really pleased and this was especially good for Elizabeth as she was a YKC member.

The Kennel Club Novice Agility Stakes Final

The evening Final will be remembered as a tough one, with the jump, A-frame and weave combination proving a little tougher than I wanted. However, although there were five eliminations, there were also five very good rounds, two in particular that were worthy of any Final.

Alan Clements did a very good round, just 5f at the weaves. Anne Edwards had another cracking round, took a chance at the A-frame, missed it, but finished in an excellent time to get the third place trophy.

Once again it was a special run from a special pair that got the audience roaring their approval. Gemma and Boo turned it on again, a superb run from an ever-improving combination, smooth, accurate, graceful. This pair have it all, a very well deserved 2nd place.

Mr Cool, unflappable, I believe in my dog, Marc Saunders and Dash were probably most peoples favourite, and they were great, totally focused, confident quiet commands, quick tight turns. It was a pleasure to watch, and a very well deserved winner. Congratulations to all the Novice dogs and handlers. You were great. Bet some of you can’t wait to do it again next year!
